Roof leaking? What to do right now
Practical steps to limit damage from a roof leak, how to spot where it's coming from, and when to call a roofer.
Limit the damage first
Move furniture and valuables, put a bucket or towels under the drip, and if water is near light fittings switch off that circuit at the fuse board.
If a ceiling is bulging with water, keep people away from it — it can come down without warning.
Where leaks usually come from
The leak inside is often not directly under the problem outside. Water runs along rafters and felt before it drips. Common culprits are slipped tiles or slates, failed lead flashing around chimneys and dormers, cracked mortar on ridges, blocked valleys and gutters, and worn flat-roof coverings.
Don't climb up yourself
Wet roofs are dangerous. A roofer can usually make a leak safe quickly with temporary measures, then repair it properly once the cause is found.
