Storm damage to your roof: a homeowner's checklist

Check from the ground
Look for tiles or slates in the garden, gaps in the roof line, displaced ridge tiles, damaged chimneys and gutters hanging loose. Use binoculars rather than a ladder.
Check inside
Look in the loft for daylight or wet insulation, and check ceilings in top-floor rooms for new stains.
Document everything
Take dated photos before anything is moved. A roofer's written report and before-and-after photos help when you contact your insurer.
